War isn't civilized and never will be, not when there are those willing to do whatever is necessary to win. That is a lesson Col. Ashlyn Shaw learned the hard way. Now she and those under her command fight an enemy determined to destroy their home world. Worse, an enemy lurks in the shadows, manipulating friend and foe alike.

Can Ashlyn hold true to herself and the values of her beloved Corps in the face of betrayal and loss? Will honor rise from the ashes of false promises and broken faith? Ashlyn and the Devil Dogs are determined to see that it does, no matter what the cost.

Honor from Ashes Honor and Duty Book 3 eBook Amanda S Green Sam Schall Reviews

I have read and re-read this three-book story arc. I am looking forward to reading the two novellas, too. One serious quibble, though, is the *serious* need for a good proofreader. The sloppy text includes many missing words, extra words, wrong pronouns, missing punctuation, etc. It jerks me out of the story enough to really irritate.
First and foremost; I thoroughly enjoyed the story! This has been an excellent series and I am eagerly awaiting the fourth (and final?) novel next year. The characters are well-formed - both heroes and villains. The plot is well-crafted and satisfying.

But. This novel needs (and deserves) another pass with a good proofreader. There are too many places with extra or missing words and even swapped ship names. This distracts from an otherwise 5-star book.
This book deserves solid 4 stars (5 stars is reserved for the Honor Harrington books ) ). The story is interesting, the writing enjoyable.

However, terrible number of mistakes and typos keeps throwing me out of the story. Anything from pure dyslexia and scanning errors to using two names for the same two-bit "extra" character in the same paragraph.

I'd gladly do the proofreading for the author, for free, even. But no one asked me ( .
First of all the author worked very hard to correct the error by with the posted file. I truly appreciate the efforts and communication from her. I have not been paid or otherwise compensated for this review.

Next this is an excellent entry in the saga of Ashlyn. The book adds more to the webs of deceit and sets the stage for redemption quite well. There are still questions to be answered in the final part of the arc and she set the stage quite well to leave the reader wanting more.

There are a couple of very minor editing issues. Don't let that throw you off. They were minor bumps in the road, and did not cause cognitive dissonance.

All in all if you enjoy Ashlyn's saga so far buy this iteration and ignore the duplicate files warnings.
First, I'd been looking forward to Honor from Ashes, the third book in the Honor and Duty series. Second, I really needed some relaxation time and I knew that this book would be well-enough written to keep my attention even when I'm stressed and pretty much only focusing on the end of the school year.

I wasn't wrong. Actually, other than having no time to read, which forced me to read this in small amounts, it was a great reading experience. A good book, for me, is one that lets me escape into another universe for a while - at least until the annoying timer goes off - and leave the real world behind. Sam Schall delivers that. Honor from Ashes is easily the strongest book of the series. For the first time, we get a well-rounded cast of characters, being introduced to Ashlyn Shaw's whole family as well as her military comrades in arms. We also get a glimpse of what sent her unjustly to a prison planet.

There is action a-plenty in this book. Assassins for close-up, and starship battles with boarding skirmishes, and all the trappings for those who want an exciting read. Improbable things happen, but they are set up well enough to make them seem a natural progression of events. This is, after all, space opera. This book, in the arc of the series, is the turning-point that marks a battle which might win the war... but the fighting isn't over yet.
Man, this book is good. I know there are some one star reviews due to some issues with the release, but ignore them. The issue is fixed. The whole series is fantastic. I have personally threatened the writer with the spirits of bad stories and difficult characters if she doesn't hurry up with the grand finale. This is the worst thing you can threaten a writer with, because threats of violence just give them ideas for later books. I have really enjoyed seeing the progression that the main character makes with the first book. Each book has its own story, but they are all one larger story line. You really need to start with the first book if you're new to the series to really appreciate this. This series has everything good writing, exploding spaceships, strong characters, dirtside battles on new worlds, friendship, loyalty, a major interstellar conspiracy, and intrigue. I think the thing that I like most is that the main character is constantly being pushed against her limits and tested, forced to rise to the occasion in order to do her duty. Buy the series, set aside a quiet evening or two, and enjoy.
I enjoyed reading this newest book in the series. Although there are no new "surprises" in the narrative, the revelation of several key elements of the conspiracy around Lt Col Ashlyn Shaw are intriguing, if somewhat expected. The pacing of the action and story are well done.

The only reason this is getting 4/5 stars is because of the lack of a solid proof read--which in several cases actually slowed down my reading trying to figure out exactly what the author meant--and some inattention to consistency (some ranks changed from previous books and from chapter to chapter here and pronouns are regularly mixed up leading me to believe that the author isn't sure if the characters are male or female). This, unfortunately, is the status quo for Schall née Greene, but her stories are too enjoyable to let that stop me from reading them.
