In Accidental India A History of the Nation s Passage through Crisis and Change, noted journalist-analyst, Shankkar Aiyar, examines India s ascent through the paradigm of seven game changers the economic liberalization of 1991, the Green Revolution of the sixties, the nationalization of banks in 1969, Operation Flood in the seventies, the mid-day meal scheme of 1982, the software revolution of the nineties, and the passing of the Right to Information Act in 2005. He argues that these turning points in the country s history were not the result of foresight or careful planning but were rather the accidental consequences of major crises that had to be resolved at any cost.

Although this book was somewhat tedious to read (lots of unusual names and at times, a bit too much detail) there is a lot of good info here. It certainly is a wakup call for anyone who thinks socialism is the answer to social problems. India has been struggling for more than half a century to make socialism functional, while S. Korea and Japan have fourished in the same time period.Product details

Accidental India A History of the Nation Passage through Crisis and Change Shankkar Aiyar 9788192328089 Books Reviews
Indian contemporary historiography has many flaws and lacunae, the most significant being an unwillingness to look dispassionately at the reasons for the gaps between the dreams and the reality.
This book bridges many of these gaps, both by providing valuable details into the contemporary context behind some key transitions in Indian social/economic/political evolution, and by evaluating the reasons why the results did not meet expectations.the central thesis, that India has done best when in crisis is an appealing one, but a belief only validate in hindsight. Under are all too many crises, post and present that have not been resolved, and that have not served as the springboard for significant progress or leading change.
The author also leaves out the interesting question as to why the political class has to some extent ushered in significant change such as the right to education, information, etc.even though they are for a large part primary causes for the crises themselves.
These are minor quibbles though. This is an important and well-written contribution to contemporary history and a must read.
